Prospective graduate students
We are recruiting a PhD student to join us in the fall of 2024! Prospective students are expected to be collaborative, hard working, most importantly, highly self-motivated about their research. Depends on the students' career goals, I encourage students to develop their own independent or semi-independent research projects within the scope of my broad interests in ecology and evolution.
If you are interested in joining us, email Dr. Linyi Zhang ([email protected]) well before the application deadline December 1. In your email, please include a CV, and a brief statement describing your research interests, research experience, why you are interested in joining the lab, and why you would be a good fit.
Prospective students should review information about the Ph.D. program with a focus on Systematics, Evolution and Ecology here: https://biology.columbian.gwu.edu/phd-biology. The Department offers financial support for Ph.D. students in the form of assistantships (https://biology.columbian.gwu.edu/graduate-student-resources#grad-funding) that can be supplemented with additional student awards.
I strongly encourage prospective students to apply for external graduate fellowship, such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). GRFP applications are typically due around the middle of October for the Life Sciences (more details available here: https://www.nsfgrfp.org/). Additionally, the Ford Foundation offers Pre-Doctoral Fellowships to support Ph.D. students (https://sites.nationalacademies.org/PGA/FordFellowships/PGA_171962).

Prospective postdocs
I currently have no funding for postdocs, but I happy to help interested candidate to develop a postdoc fellowship application. With the external funding, the candidate has the freedom to develop independent research projects that are within the realm of my research interests. Below is a list of possible sources of funding:
- NSF Post-doctoral Research Fellowship in Biology program (due by early Nov, https://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=503622)
- NIH F32 Individual Postdoctoral Fellowship ( https://www.niehs.nih.gov/research/supported/training/fellowships/f32/index.cfm)
- Ford Diversity Post-doctoral Fellowship (https://sites.nationalacademies.org/PGA/FordFellowships/PGA_171940)
- Hanna H. Gray Fellows Program (due by Dec 1, https://www.hhmi.org/programs/hanna-h-gray-fellows-program)
- Life Sciences Research Foundation (due by Oct 1 https://lsrf.org/apply/)
- Human Frontier Science Long-term fellowship program (pre-proposal due by mid May, https://www.hfsp.org/funding/hfsp-funding/postdoctoral-fellowships)

Prospective undergraduate students
We welcome undergraduate researchers who are eager to gain research experience in the fields of ecology and evolution. Prospective students should be motivated, responsible, take ownership of their project, and are willing to commit a least one semester of research. Our lab's wide-ranging research scope offers diverse research topics and techniques, providing excellent opportunities for undergraduate researchers to expand their research experience.
At the Department of Biological Sciences, GWU, there are numerous opportunities for undergraduate students to assist and / or lead research projects (https://biology.columbian.gwu.edu/undergraduate-research-opportunities), including the Honors Program (https://biology.columbian.gwu.edu/honors-program).
If you are interested, please contact Dr. Linyi Zhang ([email protected]) with a cover letter describing your research interests, your CV, GPA and relevant coursework.
